Representations of Disability

Disability:
1. Not able
2. Depreciated of general activities
3. Loss of feeling
4. Mental or physical block

Inside i'm dancing:
First impressions: Dull, grey and drab, adults watching over you, treating them like plants, don't look very happy, sad emotions, blurred, repetition, blunt and straightforward speech.

I think that later on in the film there will be issues with the people in the care home and one of the patients goes missing or causes some sort of trouble. the staff will have to deal with the scenario's. He wont be able to settle in
very well and fit in and will cause disruptions and cause upset to others.

Michael appears worried, the man is sat in the left third of the image and you can see tother figures shown in the background. This could lead into the fact that he's an important character in the extract and plays a vital part to what may be noticed later on. Dull and empty facial expressions, dull colour schemes such and grey and black to give the impression of blankness and boredom. He wears a grey baggy shirt and positioned himself away from the others and appears lonely and a sense of no control as though he's starring into space wanting to get out but knowing that he would not be fit for the outside world, restrained and restriction.

Rory appears cold and puzzled and his expression show his thoughts and feeling, his hair resembles his style and his red and black check shirt reflects anger and sadness. he appears to be starring straight ahead which could relate to his feeling of life moving forward and the bleak and dark surrounding show distress and panic he might be expressing. he has a nose piercing which shows he is different from the others with spiky hair which gives away that he is different form the other which could lead into the trouble that may be caused later on in the film.

Rory is positioned on the right this of the image separated from the other by a talllight that lights up his positioning this could resemble his part in the text and gives overhead impressions to the viewer that trouble may occur later on. You can see that he is different from the other because of his colour and style which could reflect on his personality and actions. Non diagetic sounds in the background and the soundtrack of bag-puss.

1. The Prodigy - Omen
2. Snow Patrol - Chasing cars
3. Greenday - Wake me up when september ends
4. My Chemical Romance
5. Bag-puss

Mise en scene:
Grey clothing and dark lighting showing sadness of emotions and dullness inside the care home and out, slow moving and basic camera work and editing, bag-puss quote.

Camera work:
Basic camera work reflects on the needs of the patients, it moves slowly from one scene to another with no sudden movements or clips.

Editing:
slow.

Sound:
The sound is ambient and non diagetic which is heard in the background of the text. There is diagetic sound which enhances sounds such and doors shutting and keys jingling. Silence when no one is speaking.

Discuss way in which disability is represented in the extract.
The extract represents disability in many forms and enhances the relations between disability and its functions of non able, depreciated of general activities, loss of feeling and mental or physical block. Mise en scene and camera work relate to the disabilities shown in the extract. Sound also plays a large part into relating features of disabilities with certain characters styles, emotions, thoughts and feelings.
The Mise en Scene adds to the mood and atmosphere, this representation of the setting of Inside Im Dancing consists of grey and grim clothing. The rooms are grim and also quite dark with limited key lighting. Even the outside lighting is dark and grey skies. This sets the mood of boring routine lifestyle.
To co-inside with the grim boring atmosphere, the camera work is also limited and dull. Its slow and there is no dramatic use of shots, just simple medium and close up shots. The close ups are used to determine the main characters, in the first five minutes we see close ups of the household inhabitants, but the longer held close ups are of Michael and the new character Rory.
The role of sound is less important in this extract as the theme of disability is key and the attributes of sound, camera work and mise en scene must contribute to this. The diagetic sound of Bag-puss on the television is low but then turns into a louder non diagetic sound to enhance the quote: 'Bag-puss gave a big yawn and settled down to sleep.' This quote encourages the atmosphere of the setting to be boring and dull.
The editing is similar to the role of sound in this extract, as it is slow and simple. Which contrasts to the difficulties and complications that disabled people face daily. For example in the extract, Michael is trying to signal an awaiting problem but cannot express it to his carer to warn her. This however isn't shown in dramatic flashes between Michael and the problem, but simply has the problem behind Michael in the scene. The scene changes are slow and digest between one another.

Media Ownership

Oligopoly - Means a very small elite owning a large media global company. It is a market form in which a market or industry is dominated by a small number of sellers (oligopolists).

IPC - Largest market media share.

Synergy - To market a sell a media output - A particular film/celebrity.

The potential disadvantages for the consumer:

Higher prices - Because the market is owned by the same people.

- HEADLINE: Prices too full; just like the pages.

Similar stories, layouts and advertising - Boring?

- HEADLINE: Baa baa baa; Boring.

Audience are seen as both consumers of media products and producers.

IPC media

1) Who owns IPC Media?
IPC Media is owned by a company called Time-Warner.

2) What other 'entertainment' interests does this company own?
Time-Warner has a large range of entertainment interests, including websites such as AOL.com and People.com. They also own TV channels such as CNN and Sky. They also own Warner-Brothers, which is at the front of every aspect of the entertainment industry.

3) Why might this company have bought IPC Media? Benefits?
Time-Warner may have bought IPC Media because they may have known that magazines were still going to be popular today. They may noticed that magazines were broadening their distribution of media, so they decided to invest in the company. Since IPC Media owns such a large range of the Magazine Market with over 80 different titles. Time-Warner may have wanted to include Magazine’s in their company, since before they only owned TV channels and websites.

4) Are there potential drawbacks for the consumer/society when big corporations own a large share of the media market?
There are a few drawbacks of a company such as Time-Warner owning such a large market share of the media market. For example if IPC Media owns a large part of the Magazine market, then they can dictate the prices, because there isn’t any competition from elsewhere.

Text Analysis

Aim: To explore in which the status is represented in television drama extract.

Semiotics: Language of signs

  • Semantics: Relation between signs and the things to which they refer; their denotation

  • Syntactics: Relations among signs in formal structures

  • Pragmatics: Relation between signs and their effects on those (people) who use them

Denotation: Group of characters on an ordinary street. Got home late, two boys in bed, single mum, ordinary life.

Connotation: single mum, general simple clothing, poor looking street.

What does sound bring to a media text?

  • Creates tone, mood and atmosphere

  • Sets the scene

  • Gives insight to what will happen next

  • Emotions

  • Silence s a key too for playing with audiences emotions

Diegetic sound: Sound that comes from the world of the text itself music comes a scene, for example, radio or DJ in night club, this adds atmosphere.

Non diegetic sound: Sound that is added over the action, added in to post production to create mood or impression, programmes theme tune, or music used to emphasise actions to create tension and create mood.

Synchronised sound: Occurs when there is a match between actions and sound, action brought to life with sound. e.g.: If explosion happened, expect and appropriate explosion sounds, sense of relation between action and text.

Selective sound: Emphasise aspects of texts or moments of dialogue, e.g.: soundtrack through scene, bits emphasised of the text.

The Street sound:

Non diegetic sound for theme tune – dull, ambient, not exiting, reflects lives of people featured, average, normal life.

Selective: Shower – stress and tension.

Synchronised: Door slamming, rustling keys, shower, car pulling up on road.

Social Status within the clip: Plays with your emotions, please, begging governors to take them in.

How the sound creates status in the extract:

Cars going past, silent, heavy breathing, quickly speaking to get it all out quickly, nervous and pleading (repetitive word: please - pleading). Ambient, sad, depressing music – non diegetic sound getting louder after speech has finished/ending (pleading).

Discuss the ways the status is represented in the clip

In this answer I must:

Use media vocabulary and terminology

Discuss sound by name

Make answers as detailed as possible.

How status is created:.

Camera work: creates a sense f status because close up shots are used to show the expressions and pain the main character is feeling and how she is pleading to get her kids into the school. Shots from above give the impressions of the governors looking down on them as they are more powerful.

Mise en scene: Slouched positioning of the characters shows that they are more poor than the other people there dressed smartly and sitting up tall. Basic outfits shows where they come from and that they are not the best off and the characters all have basic makeup up to show natural lighting on their faces to show shadows and expressions clearly.

Editing: Shots flash from one to another fairly quickly, shows anger and sadness on main character when she s in meeting and shots flick from her to governors back to her and children.

Sound: Cars going past, silent, heavy breathing, quickly speaking to get it all out quickly, nervous and pleading (repetitive word: please - pleading). Ambient, sad, depressing music – non diegetic sound getting louder after speech has finished/ending (pleading).

Highlights from my textual analysis:

Sound: Non diegetic in final part of clip

Camera work: Medium close up shows expressions

Editing: Flicking shots to show sadness

Mise en scene: Natural high key lighting which create shadows of faces to show expressions on faces

In semiotic analysis – Sugar rush.

The picture shown on the front of this dvd shows two girls aged about 16 laying down on their fronts, holding ice creams. You can see one of the girls giving a typical miimc of a 'teenage attitude' by sticking her middle finger up and pulling a 'I don't care look'. This give the impression that they are two girls with a typical teenage attitude. They are laying n the beach which also shows that they are on the border of becoming adults because they now have the freedom to go out and be trusted by themselves. Also the colours scheme of pink and white relates to the 'girly' colours of 'candy', 'ice creams' and 'makeup' which all tell the viewer the type of girls they are. The girl on the left appears to be more of a rebel that the girl on the right who seems to appear innocent and is looking at her friend as if to say 'what are you doing?'.

Although the picture is simplistic, it is also very effective and creates an image to the viewer of the what the item consists of. The lighting also effects on their personalities as the girl on the left appears to be shadowed over by the good goody and looks as though she is the more type to cause trouble.

Media convergence

Media convergence is the shift in media which allows it to evolve and progress.
It will benefit producers and consumers because it makes life much easier as products are now becoming smaller and much more compact. Products can quickly become outdated and consumers race to get the latest products.

Meg's evaluation of REC.

www.mwhitney1992.blogspot.com

I think that our magazine REC. is an appealing front cover design for our specified audience. I do think that it would generally appeal more to men although we would like it to be a unisex magazine so maybe this is something we need to look into more to make it a more versatile magazine design.

I like the way that our magazine design feature bold and eye catching colours which do mix well considering there is a range of colours, although there is a sense of consistency with the colours of red, green, blue and white which also are eye catching because these are simple 'primary' like colours.

I think that it would stand out against other media text because it has an attractive design which clearly emphasises the content of what the magazine includes and although men may be slightly more attracted, we could work on this to make it more appealing for women too.
If i were to pick up this magazine in a shop i would automatically what to read what was inside as i think that the cover is very reader friendly and features points of attraction, for example, the puff in the top right hand corner which includes a 'Win' section, and other cover lines such as 'Top 50 cameras' etcetera.

Also i think that the masthead 'Rec.' appeals to the reader because this relates to 'recording' on a video camera which instantly draws in the reader and signifies this is a media related magazine.

Overall i think that our magazine would be a successful selling point on the media tech magazine market because it has an attractive colour scheme and a layout which appeals to many readers.
